“Before returning to academia, I was at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C., where I was the acting chief economist involved in policy decisions related to securities regulation. Since coming to UGA in 1987, I have taught a broad spectrum of students at UGA, and at every level, it is enjoyable to get to know my students and to hear about their backgrounds and their hopes for the future. It is difficult to pick a favorite course of all time, but probably my current favorite is my class in which students manage an actual investment portfolio. The students analyze the market, make stock purchase and sale decisions, and report on their performance to a supervisory board of alumni and to the UGA Foundation. I also enjoy teaching Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities (CURO) seminars, introducing students to the research process and encouraging them in their own independently designed projects. And, of course, I loved teaching in the UGA at Oxford program last summer.”
A forum for discussion of social and scientific responsibilities toward the environment in a rational and interdisciplinary manner, the certificate is awarded to undergraduate students who successfully complete at least 18 hours of undergraduate course work, including at least 7 credit hours in core courses (one 3 or 4–hour course in Ecology, one 3–hour course in Ethics, and one 1–hour course in Environmental Ethics), 7 or 8 hours in approved elective courses, and 3 hours for an approved research paper in Environmental Ethics.
“I enjoy teaching undergraduate core courses such as textiles and textile testing. I like the rigor of these courses, which are prerequisites for our fashion merchandising and furnishings and interiors majors. Additionally, product development is a favorite course. In this course, students work on a stage-gate system to develop a product by participating in various activities such as business plan development, concept generation and economics. This course challenges students to become productive by garnering entrepreneurial skills and going through a structured process.”
"I valued UGA’s environmental economics and management program through the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, which offers an interdisciplinary approach to business and science. UGA was not on my radar until I chose to spend the summer of my junior year in high school working in a UGA Extension laboratory as a Young Scholar in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences’ Office of Diversity Relations. That summer, I was exposed to the real UGA—a beautiful campus, a lively college town, helpful professors and every student I encountered loved the school."
The curriculum addresses critical environmental issues from a business and scientific perspective. Students are trained to understand and appreciate the non-economic aspects of resource and environmental problems, including social, ecological, physical, and legal considerations, all while serving as members of interdisciplinary teams involved in resource and environmental management, planning, and analysis.
Available at both the Athens and Griffin campus locations, students receive general economic and business training that combines courses in agricultural economics, agribusiness, and food science to build a broad knowledge base of the food industry and its many operations across the food processing, restaurant, and food retailing sectors. Available electives include courses in marketing, food chemistry, government regulation of food safety and quality, food packaging, hazard analysis control, and poultry processing.
A critical feature of modern economics is the growing number of companies that transact business through international channels. The Economics and International Business co-major at UGA provides opportunities for students to learn about these international business processes and economic institutions. Coursework topics include business environments, strategic management, international immersion, international finance, information technology, and foreign language. All students must satisfy an international immersion requirement such as a study abroad program, an internship in International Business, or additional foreign languages. (Refer to the Pre-Business major for information on applying.)
