Others claim the "-30-" comes from a time when stories were written in longhand X marked the end of a sentence, XX the end of a paragraph and XXX meant the end of a story.
Julie Williams, a professor of journalism and mass communication at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, says the guessing game over "-30-" has taken on a life of its own, in part because the ambiguity leaves it open to a wide array of interpretations.
The Cook City Council began its meeting on Dec. 28, with Truth in Taxation. A 3 percent levy was approved and the budget for 2018 accepted. Without questions or concerns presented by citizens, this meeting was adjourned.
The regular monthly meeting first addressed payment of invoices (River Street bridge and 2016 infrastructure). Also announced was the receipt of an IRRRB grant for the gazebo and pathway by the library discussed last month, in the amount of $25,000.

The Ambulance Department is seeing an upswing in new hires and volunteers; a loaner is in use as one rig sustained damage; a course for parents and grandparents on family first-aid will be held Jan. 29 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Community Center.
Tim Johnson is appointed to represent Cook on the Lake Vermilion Trail Board, with Harold Johnston as a substitute as needed.
New maintenance director Don Flack proposed a new water tower inspection company. Under the Maguire Ironworks construction contract, they agreed to 12 years of inspection. This other company, KLM, would cost more than other companies, but offers 30 to 50 photographs without draining the tower among its more than usual options and warranties. They come highly recommended with many satisfied customers. The council approved the recommendation.
The in-city bow hunt had nine deer registered.
The Old Muni and VFW Post 1757 were granted license renewals for 2018.
The 2017 weed inspection report was approved, with "common tansy" noted to grow in ditches, and people picking them to use in bouquets.
In closing comments, thanks was given to the City employees for a great year, to Don Flack for all the well-cleared roads and sidewalks, and to Stephanie Beaudry for all she did to get the levy and budget work organized and accurate. A request was made to check on neighbors in this cold weather. Also, with all the fires already this winter, check your electricity (cords, outlets) and smoke alarms. The council also sends its prayers and get-well wishes to Dave Quiser.
"I think journalists have always liked to create odd or weird names for things that they do or conventions that they have."For most, the origin of "-30-" is less important than what it represents, a remnant of a bygone era when shouts of "copy" echoed through the newsroom and computers seemed the stuff of science fiction.
"I think people were anxious to come up with explanations for it."Or maybe "-30-" is just another way for journalists to suggest that theirs is cooler than other professions.
