Since this section will explain the reference page(s) of the paper, we must discuss plagiarism and in-text citations. References are used to guard against plagiarism. Plagiarism is a crime that can result in a bad grade, expulsion from a class or in the worst scenario dismissal from the college or university. There have also been court cases when the plagiarism has been especially egregious. In-text citations tell the reader who is responsible for the ideas presented, and either when the original piece was written, its page number or both.
Harvard in-text citations are nearly identical to APA, except that magazines and books are cited the same way as other in-text citations. APA format requires page numbers for magazines and books. (After the quoted passage, place the name of the author and the date of publication in paranthesis. For example:

You may be required to use slightly different formats for other papers, such as papers submitted for publication to refereed journals, each of which typically have their own styles.
However, when you do a search on, say, Google, the address that comes up will be a long string of gobbledygook. That's a temporary search identifier created by Google and no two people will get that address. Also you have no guarantee that anyone who uses it will get through. Remember, there is no one correct way to say anything. There is no one correct way to order or word your paper. There are, however, ways that are clearly wrong. And, in most cases, there is only one way to spell a given word! Most of you have probably written less than a handful of term papers. Writing clearly and concisely is more difficult than you may think. Remember not to feel too bad if a fellow student, Writing Fellow, or professor has a large number of "negative" comments on a paper you think of as being nearly perfect. It's like playing music. If you've never spent much time listening to the symphony, not only will you have a tough time playing classical music well, you probably will have a hard time even if you sound well. Since the purpose of your paper is to convey information to other people, other people's opinions of your work matter! Have other's read your paper, and listen to their comments. Accepting criticism is not easy, but it's the only way to learn to write.
Nobody cares you find references. You can hunt in the library, ask other people, or use a dowsing rod, Tarot cards or a Ouija board. So searching on the Internet is perfectly okay - You will still have to use acceptable sources, but nobody cares how you find them. Only if your assignment forbids Internet searches - rare, but it might happen - are you barred.

If you include the author's name(s) in the text of a sentence in the paper, you may omit their names from the parentheses as follows: "Austin (1996) includes valuable references to ...." or "The examples given by Li and Crane (1993) on web addresses ...".
For every in-text citation there must be a reference listed and vice versa. This reference is a complete acknowledgement of the author(s) and information on how the audience can find the referenced material.
The reference page, similar to the title page, is completely separate from the rest of the paper. After you have finished writing your paper and entered the last period in the document, hit enter to add an extra space, then press the “Insert” button in the tool bar. From the resulting that drop down menu select “Page Break” and a new page will appear where you can record your reference list.
