On the other hand, there are a lot of differences between the paintings. Firstly, Dega’s painting depicts the contrast between brightness and vividness, on the one hand, and sadness and thoughtfulness of the woman, on the other. In this regard, Cezanne, even though he uses contrasting colors, shows the sorrow of the woman who is leaning against her hand in quite a dull, unclear environment, deprived of any bright, joyful, vivid objects. Even the woman seems to be deprived of natural vividness, while the young Italian woman of Dega wears bright clothes, her complexion is healthy and bright but sad. Such appearance of Dega’s woman contrasts to pale complexion, red eyes and unclear posture of Cezanne’s woman. In such a way, Dega contrasts the optimism, brightness and vividness of the environment to sadness of the woman, while Cezanne shows sufferings only and there are no optimistic trends in the painting. In fact, it is possible to presuppose that there are some issues related to death in Cezanne’s painting and woman is mourning, while Dega’s painting mainly refers to the life and his woman is sad because of some problems with her beloved or other problems related to the life but not the death.
In addition, numerous artists produced paintings in the realist style, including the Romantic Theodore Gericault (notably his asylum portraits), the Impressionist Edgar Degas (notably his ballet pictures)
Etching in very good condition, margins clean.
Etchings by Edgar Degas are mainly known from the prints published by Ambroise Vollard after the death of the artist.
