Audience is another way to refer to your readers. Depending upon your audience, you may choose to adopt a formal voice, a mixed style voice, or even a casual voice. In addition, knowing who your audience is will help you to determine the level of detail that you should provide and the word choices you may make. For example, if your audience for a specific paper is determined to be “insiders” with an intimate knowledge of the subject matter, then you might choose to omit some background information. If you are uncertain of the level of the reader's familiarity with your topic, however, you should write the paper so that any reader can read and understand it.
If you are not familiar with your audience, making an informal list of the kinds of people who comprise it can help you approach the research necessary to understand them. Be as specific as possible. The main purpose of advertising is to persuade the audience to take some action, which is usually buying the product.Â Sometimes advertising does not do this directly.Â Instead it tries to persuade the audience that there is some difference between products that are really the same, such as bars of soap or cars.Â One of the ways that advertising does this is to create the idea that there is some special value in a product.Â For example, a car manufacturer may try to persuade people that owners of their cars shows have a high social status, as in the case of Mercedes. Sponsors try to find out through research the types of values that will persuade the audience to buy their products.

Please note that the main point here is not to say that it is only the number of research articles matters most, but rather that having a broad spectrum of papers to choose from helps you choose your topic for at least the following two reasons: 1) a larger pool of sources provides you with a broader perspective of the topics within your scope of research and 2) along the way you will find many topics within your field that you DO NOT want to write about! So, one particularly effective way of viewing research is not finding the absolute minimum sources to "get by", but rather to find a variety of sources that you can use...like an artist uses negative space to "carve" shapes out of a dark background...to guide you toward topics that are more directly relevant to your topic.
