Denmark controlled it from 1714 until 1807, when Great Britain gainedcontrol over it during the Napoleonic Wars. It then became acenter for spying and smuggling against France. Less than 3 weeksbefore the surrender of Germany in World War II the British dropped7000 bombs on the small island, annihilating almost everything andforcing the evacuation of the island. Britain again tookpossession of the island after the war and used it as a bombingrange. In 1947 the British attempted to destroy the island byblowing up some 4000 tons of surplus World War II ammunition and bombsin what was known as the "British Bang". It was one of thebiggest non-nuclear detonations in history. The islandsurvived. In 1952 the island was returned to Germany and theformer inhabitants were allowed to return to what was left. Today Helgoland is again a tourist resort. One side of thisunofficial 2017 eight-sided 20 Mark coin depicts the island and itscoat-of-arms. The other side pictures a pair of NorthernGannet birds (Morus bassanus). The birds will travel for 500to 1000 miles (800 to 1600km) but each year will return to the samebreeding grounds to find their same mate. The silver-platedProof coin has a mintage of just 200 pieces.
